SUMMARY:Lagos Book and Art Festival (LABAF) 2023
DESCRIPTION:The 25th edition of the annual Lagos Book & Art Festival LABAF\, holds from Monday November 13 to 19\, 2023 at Freedom Park\, Campbell Street Lagos\, and virtually. \nNB: Please see below for full briefs on both CORA and the LABAF. \nThe theme for the 2023 edition is THE RESET: History and the Darkling Plain\, and it is designed to reflect on the various critical points in the history of Nigeria-and by extension the histories of rest of Africa and the world- through written texts and performances in drama\, music\, poetry and the visual arts etc . \nThe essence is to mine those lessons in the political and cultural history of the nation to plot a progressive direction for its future\, as we settle into\, and navigate the constructs of a new political dispensation. \nNB: Please see full narrative on the theme below \nLABAF commenced in 1999\, the year of the nation’s return to civil rule. \nThough a literary feast of ideas and life in outlook\, the festival has over the years\, metamorphosed to being a Campaign for LITERACY devoted to heightening interest of the populace to be active participants in the knowledge economy that currently rules transactions in global political\, economic and cultural affairs. The festival is focused on three thematic elements: EDUCATION. ENLIGHTENMENT. EMPOWERMENT. \nLABAF’s main programme iterations include: \n\nConversations around ideas contained in the books of the festival – relevant to the theme of the festival\nReadings\, Reviews and sessions on Writing and Publishing\nExhibitions of Books and Visual Arts\nWorkshops and Mentoring Sessions for young people\nPerformances in Poetry\, Drama\, Music\, Dance etc\nArthouse celebrations of eminent artistes and culture workers who have registered their names and footprints in the cause of nation building – the idea is to set them up as role models for both old and young people – to inspire hope\, motivate them to aspire to greater accomplishments in their chosen careers or vocation\n\nSpecifically for young people\, the festival also stages \n\nGreen Festival – devoted to students in Junior and Senior Secondary schools. This is in partnership with Children And The Environment\, CATE.\nCORA Youth Creative Club — which yearly congregate youths and young adults from different parts of the countries for mentoring and training in their natural talents and acquired skills. This is in partnership with Events By Nature.\n\n  \n  \nNARRATIVE ON THE THEME \nThe Reset: History and the Darkling Plain \nThis thematic guide illuminates our choice of books and the discussions in the curse of the festival. \nWith The Reset\, LABAF continues the debate around the national question through reviews and discussions of selected books that speak to the theme. The basic tenet is that a nation is imagined at the level of ideas\, before it is physically constructed. \nThe conversations at every LABAF since 2005 have been a set of reviews of arguments about the nation building project and the current status of our collective humanity. \nLABAF started in 1999\, the year of Nigeria’s return to democracy\, but it was in 2005\, at the 7th edition\, for which we chose the theme: Narrations of Survival\, that we began to purposefully set a theme around which the festival-long conversations would coalesce. \nIn the last five years however\, every theme has been a takeoff\, or a riff off the prior year’s theme. \nIn 2020\, we examined the nation/the world in a state of flux\, a period of languor\, so the theme was A State of Flux. \nIn 2021\, we (the nation/the planet) had left the state of flux\, but we were at a crossroad. So\, the festival chose: A Fork in the Road. \nIn 2022\, we were glimpsing 2023\, a year in which we would go for elections. What better way to prepare everyone’s mind for the choices to be made at the polls\, than examine the kind of future we wanted for ourselves? LABAF’s 2022 theme was thus “Pathways to the Future“. \n2023… \nNOW we have a newly elected government which has taken over an estate nearing a Failed state. The world abroad is in a bigger turmoil than the one that greeted Donald Trump in 2016. To get a grip on how we can reclaim our country\, we have to examine where we are coming from. \nIt is those historical texts that we hope to engage more at the 2023 feast. LABAF 2023 seeks to engage with the past\, learn and relearn from it and organize the future. That is why we chose the theme The Reset: History and the Darkling Plain. \nThe word is a much darker plain than Ken Saro-Wiwa glimpsed when he wrote On A Darkling Plain\, an extended argument against the Biafra war\, one of the few texts about the war from the perspective of a minority. \nBy gifting the festival its theme\, the book becomes one of the 15 books of LABAF 2023 \nOther books that will be discussed in the course of the seven days include \nFICTION: SARO\, by Nike Campbell | Little Suns\, by Zakes Mda | Dust Child\, by Nguyễn Phan Quế Mais \nNON-FICTION: A Measure of Grace\, by Akin Mabogunje |I’m Still with You\, by Emmanuel Iduma | Then Spoke the Thunder\,  by Peter Enahoro | The New Map\, by Daniel Yergin | A Shred of Fear\, by Uche Nwokedi | An African Abroad\, by Olabisi Ajala | On a Darkling Plain\, by Ken Saro Wiwa | My Odyssey\, by Nnamdi Azikiwe | Formation: The Making of Nigeria from Jihad to Amalgamation\, by  Fola Fagbule & Feyi Faweyinmi \nCORA BOOKTrek:  Obalende: A Nation in Motion\, by Wale Adeduro |There is Heaven for Bad Girls\, by Adenrele Niyi | Time & Chance\, by Adebayo OlowoAke | and more \n  \nGREEN FESTIVAL (Students & Youths) \nNative Tales\, by Olamidé Adams | Cracked\, by Funmi Ilori | The Green Advocate\, by Alexander Akhigbe | Bisi Recycle\, by Temiloluwa Adesina | Captain Excellence and The Great Hall of Knowledge\, by Izehi Anuge | Mma Made\, by Chinyere Evelyn Ifedora | Dear Mother\, by Nora Sanya | How to Talk to Your Child About SEX Without Shame \,by Funmi Alagbe | The Money People\, by Gbemi Shashore | The King & the Colony\, by Olasupo Shashore | Màmá\, It’s a Girl\, by Stella Damasus | Not Too Young To Run\, by Ogbu Eme  | NALA – I am Black and Proud\, by Seyi Odewoye | Better Tommorow\, by Dotun Famoriyo \n  \nVISUAL ARTS SECTION \n\nTimeless Memories: Elastic Effects 2023 – The Man Who Didn’t Die in the Face of Tyranny — Conceptual/Installation by Oludamola Adebowale\nBoarding 2023 — conceptual art by Dili Humphrey Onuzulike (Junkman)\nNOTICE\, We are here? These are people adjudged by the CORA ThinkTank to have used their natural and material resources to contribute to the flowering of the creative space. The idea is to set them up as models of emulation for young and old members of the society to find value in contributing selflessly to the growth of the national economy through the creative industries. \nThanks \nToyin Akinosho                                          Jahman Anikulapo \nSecretary General                                              Prog Chair (08033076418) \n

DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the Felabration Committee at Freedom Park\, I am excited to extend an invitation to the general public for Felabration 2023 – an incredible annual celebration of the iconic Nigerian musician and human rights activist\, Fela Anikulapo Kuti. \nFelabration is not just a festival; it’s a movement that reverberates the essence of Afrobeat\, a genre that Fela introduced and popularized. As a platform that champions social justice\, freedom\, and pan-Africanism\, Felabration intertwines music\, art\, culture\, and education into a week-long event that embodies Fela’s values. \nScheduled to take place from Monday\, 9th October to Sunday\, 15th October. Felabration 2023 will unfold at the vibrant Freedom Park in Lagos. We are expecting a diverse crowd of over 5\,000 attendees\, uniting from Nigeria and around the globe. The festival will feature electrifying performances by both local and international artists\, captivating exhibitions\, and more. \nThis year will mark the 85th posthumous birthday and 26 years after the demise of Fela Anikulapo Kuti. The Felabration  Committee for Freedom Park plans to have intellectual and fun engaging presentations of Documentaries\, Exhibitions\, Music\, Arts & Culture aptly sub-themed “UNDERGROUND SYSTEM”. The title of Fela’s last album (1992) demonstrates the resilience of the human spirit. In line with this agenda\, we decided to retain the sub-theme for the third (3rd) year\, in addendum to this year’s general theme\, “Question Jam Answer.” \nWe sincerely hope to have you join us at Felabration 2023 as we come together to celebrate Fela’s indomitable spirit\, music\, and enduring legacy. \nWe look forward to receiving you\, and you may also call to book your bunch of tickets ahead of the festival. \nSee you there!

SUMMARY:iREP INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:The 13th iRepresent International Documentary Film Festival\, which has held traditionally in the third week of march every year\, is slated for March 16-19. This is within the election season which starts with the Presidential and National Assembly polls on February 25 and\, the Governorship and House of Assembly polls on March 11. This coincidence would naturally have optioned either a postponement or outright cancellation of the festival\, which seems logical. \nHowever\, with determination not to miss out on the historical trajectory of the festival\, especially after the major disruption occasioned by the Covid19 pandemic lockdowns of 2020 and 2021\, the Board and management of the Foundation for the Promotion of Documentary Film in Africa\, organisers of the annual documentary film festival\, have resolved to stage a minimised version of the festival at same appointed date. \nThe coincidence with the electioneering season\, of course\, has consequential disruptions to the nature and character of the festival. Essentially\, it also has implication for the thematic thrust of the festival. Thus\, unlike in previous editions\, in which the festival embraces global thematic thrust\, the 2023 festival would specifically focus on Nigeria in its season of epochal political transition. \nThe theme: Documenting the Underserved: Agenda for Nigeria 2023\, has been strategically designed to address cogent issue in the national polity\, which essentially is about enthroning responsible political system that insists on good governance and participatory democracy – two ingredients that have been lacking in Nigeria’s chequered 24-year-old democratic journey which began in 1999. \nPart of the objectives of the theme is to direct attention of particularly young people to the power of documentary films in empowering them to be active participants in the discourses in their socio-political\, economic and cultural environment. \nSpecifically\, the theme\, as would be reflected in choice of films to be screened and discussions at the minimised plenary\, is to spotlight the powerful tool the young people have in their hands through their smart phones and other electronic gadgets\, through which they could expose the needs of their communities for the benefit of their elected representatives\, who hopefully would be assuming their various offices with fresh mindset of serving the interest of their people. \nAs feared\, the Gubernatorial and House of Assembly elections slated for Saturday\, March 11 has been shifted to Saturday March 18\, which runs smack into the March 16-19 date for the 2023 iREP Documentary Film Festival. The Board and Programme Directorate of the festival have\, however\, resolved to PROCEED with the festival as scheduled. \nThe IREP runs from Thursday through Sunday; as it stands\, only the Saturday Programing content will be adversely affected. This means that the Plenary sessions (all virtual) will run as planned\, only the evening screening on Saturday evening at the various centres will be affected. \n
