From a Prison to a Place of Freedom
Once a colonial prison, now a vibrant cultural and recreational space. Freedom Park stands as a symbol of resilience, creativity and a brighter future for generations.

1860s
After Britain made Lagos a Colony in 1861, the Broad Street Prison was established — the first colonial prison in Nigeria.

1885
Repeatedly set ablaze by opponents of colonial rule, the mud-walled prison was rebuilt with bricks imported from England.

1979
Broad Street Prison was pulled down, and the grounds were left abandoned as a dumping ground.
